As someone who can’t live a day without my cup of green tea, I’ve usually always had a trusty electric tea kettle on hand. It was a fixture of my kitchen, always there to quickly and conveniently deliver hot water on demand. But during my cross-country move from NYC to SF this year, I reluctantly had to leave my kettle behind. After arriving in SF, faced with a choice between re-purchasing the same electric convenience or embracing my minimalist preferences, I opted for a simple, non-electric kettle that works on the stove.

At first, I braced myself for the frustration of abandoning a purpose-built tool designed specifically for my tea-making needs. But to my surprise, I loved it.   3. A sprawling toolset increases the mental overhead required to understand, manage, and leverage each tool effectively. Engineers and analysts spend more time learning tools than solving business problems.

A simpler future

The next generation of data tooling shouldn’t be about adding more tools. It should be about using fewer tools better. We need to resist the temptation of shiny, purpose-built solutions and focus instead on building resilient, flexible systems that prioritize outcomes over features.

Much like my stovetop kettle, the simplest solution is often the best one. It’s time to rethink how we approach data tooling, not as a race to adopt the latest and greatest, but as an opportunity to create systems that are elegant, efficient, and built to last. Because at the end of the day, what matters isn’t the tool — it’s the tea 🍵
